OLPH invites all parishioners to get in the spirit and join our many religious education groups. Our Kinder-Catholic, Elementary CCD, Youth Ministry, RCIA, and Children’s Catechumenate staff will be on hand to discuss teacher formation and commitment.
We will also feature a special group discussion for Eucharist Ministers, Lectors, and Ushers.
Group topics will include scripture, tradition, prayer, service, class lesson plans and activities.
Current teachers, formation day will satisfy the basic catechist certificate requirement for Module 4 session #3. For more information or to RSVP call Rosemarie Dermer 322-7200.

Garces Memorial High School is pleased to announce that it plans to offer bus service for families living in west Bakersfield beginning in fall 2005. Drop-off and Pick-up location will be at St. Philips Church. If you currently have a student attending Garces or if you are thinking about Garces as an option for your student high school education, call Garces Memorial at 327-2578 ext. 122 for more information.
Mrs. McGovern’s first graders are excitedly preparing for their “Ocean Adventure” by studying sea plants and animals. Math study will include the “Guesstamation Jar” where estimation and graphing will be necessary to reveal the quantity of items in the jar.
As an enrichment to the study of ancient Greek culture, sixth grade students will view examples of Greek art and sketching in the same manner. Their sketches will be enhanced with water colors. In literature they are finishing reading and discussing White Fang.
Mr. Prinster’s accelerated algebra students are reviewing for the Garces Algebra Challenge Test to be given on May 18.
Mrs. Smith’s seventh and eighth grade science students are studying the reproductive system. During this unit they will view the Nova video, “Miracle of Life”.
Congratulations to eighth grade students, Torey Bangi and Michael Bedard, recipients of the 2005 Kiwanis Citizenship Award. Torey and Michael will be among outstanding eighth grade students from Bakersfield area schools recognized at a luncheon in their honor.
Faculty members have attended the first of four on-campus workshops where they are learning how to use the new Smart Board purchased with Wish List funds. They are learning this interactive technology tool can enhance teaching and learning through impressive graphics and manipulation of visual data
