In Mrs. Cunniffe’s 1st/2nd grade summer session fun activities in math, art, phonics and reading are used to reinforce and enrich the summer program. In art the students are working with chalk, watercolors and tempera paints. Science is also being explored through videos. Two groups work at their challenge level during reading time with the assistance of Mrs. Krecklow, classroom aide. The use of audio tapes for stories and songs helps in the learning process.
Lettuce is growing in the third grade summer school classroom and students are busily charting graphing and comparing the three lettuce types. During their reading workshop, small groups are preparing short skits to present to their classmates. Utilizing the Smart Interactive Board in the Science Room, third graders are reinforcing their math regrouping skills playing baseball and basketball review games. The layers of the earth will be illustrated through hard boiled eggs and by creating the earth’s layers in jello. Students reinforce grammar and spelling skills by journaling their daily activities.
Mrs. Bair’s students in the 4th and 5th grades are busy writing an imaginative story about a
creative character that has many adventures. They are also reading about and exploring magnets in science and completing many activities to help them learn about the use for magnets, where magnets are found, and the types of materials that are attracted to magnets.
